The Pine Island Hunting Club was organized in 1931. Land was purchased from the Trueheart and Brown estates and combined with an adjoining island belonging to Mrs. S.W. Henderson, Jr. The 5,400 acre club began with such notable Angelina Countians as E.L. Bartlett, A.F. Perry, E.L. Kurth, W.P. Rutland, John Henderson, Sr., Roy W. Kurth, Sr., A.M. Glass, Ulen Medford, E.W. Leach, Sr., Harry Abram, Roscoe Perry, B.J. Boon, Dave Cochran, C.E. Brazil, N.D. Shands, Sr., Jean Shotwell, J.H. Kurth, Jr., Ben Scott, E.C. Durham, Dr.C.E. Alexander, Dr. J.W. Hawkins, R.S. Philen, Delmas Newsom and W.D. Newsom. Membership was limited to 42.
